About Michelle

About Michelle BenjaminMichelle Benjamin blends traditional and digital art media to create work that resonates on multiple levels, occupying a unique space in the art world. Benjamin is naturally drawn to silhouettes, especially the stark shape of leafless trees. “They are the most evocative images on earth, and I have this desire to capture as many as I can in my lifetime,” she explains. But she is also drawn to other forms in nature, along with people and cities. The artist uses limited palettes in each piece, often involving complementary colors, which adds a shimmering quality to her work. Benjamin's photographs and sketches undergo digital evolution and transformation in her studio where they are combined with digital design techniques in a dynamic melting pot of traditional and modern art methods.

The artist was born into an artistic family in Durban, South Africa. She currently resides in her native country in the city of Pretoria.

Benjamin is well known in the art world as a humanitarian and art activist because of her collaboration with Save the Rhino International (London). Benjamin donates artworks of her rhino pieces to SRI, in the fight against rhino poaching and possible extinction of this endangered species of wild life. On October 16 2012, Benjamin's artwork 'It's My Horn' was auctioned at the Prince Albert Suite, The London Zoo, for $1290. All proceeds from this auction were donated to Save The Rhino International (London).

In April – May 2012 Michelle Benjamin exhibited her digital artworks at Agora Gallery, Chelsea New York.

On December 6, 2012, the artist participated in a fundraiser for Coney Island after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. The benefit fundraiser was held at Soho Gallery for Digital Art, New York. The artist donated 5 of her artwork images of Coney Island.

Benjamin then participated in the SGDA Christmas Group Show. Her very popular artworks 'Girl from Durban' and 'Zoe' were exhibited at this show.

Michelle Benjamin exhibited at Soho Gallery for Digital Art in the 'Let It Shine Group Show' in May-June 2013 https://www.facebook.com/events/441497862607887/ 10 of her artworks are being exhibited on digital canvases at this very prestigious gallery for digital art. Soho Gallery was rated among six of the best art galleries in New York City by the CBS Television Network.

The artist is currently exhibiting at the Soho Arthouse, New York City (previously known as SGDA).

Benjamin is promoting the rhino cause in her exhibition. Michelle Benjamin's world famous artwork Blue Rhino (with an anti poaching statement) is being exhibited at the October Moon Show, Soho, New York along with pieces from her Red Rhino Collection.

“Everyone’s Homeland” Cella Neapolitan 2008

Mixed Media Collage on Canvas 9x12 in. framed to 14x17 in.

Vintage map + star button, with thumb piano keys, Botswana agates + African sand beads

My love for Africa was sparked by reading “Cry, the Beloved Country” in high school, fueled in my rock-tumbling days by my favorite stone, Botswana agates, and deepened in recent years by awareness of how special the continent is. Poverty, disease, war and famine are destroying this most beautiful of places.

In creating this piece, I pondered why I feel so drawn to Africa, a place I’ve never visited and which holds no familial ancestry. I think the tug comes from knowing ~ not just intellectually but on some deep genetic level ~ that humanity was born in Africa. Hence the compass lines laid over the map, which double as lines of human emigration outward and lines of global attention inward. It is my hope that consciousness of our commonality can begin to reverse the plagues on Africa, which after all is everyone’s homeland.

ORIGINAL IS SOLD, SIGNED ARCHIVAL PRINTS ARE AVAILABLE FOR $80

About:

Living life and painting as much as I can.

Thank you for stopping by. I hope you enjoy the paintings. I like to try new techniques and styles as much as I can to better myself. I mainly use oil and acrylic paints. I have Corel Painter X3 digital training which I enjoy also. Stay safe, live life, and paint as much as you can.

I am retired from the military. I have a year of graduate school at the University of Denver but realized I did not really want to work in my major after all. Instead, I decided to pursue my lifelong dream of being an artist. I took some traditional art courses and am currently pursuing my degree in Studio Art.
